This training basically involves completing enough challenges and races to unlock the final showdown. The whole premise is that Lightning McQueen is due for a rematch against Jackson Storm, but in true Rocky style, there is much training to be done in order to win that race. Set after the events of the new film but careful not to spoil much, this new title once again goes for the arcade racing style but injects a bit of character and storytelling into it.

I suspect that its underwhelming sales had something to do with being related to a film that many people simply didn’t connect with, because I refuse to believe that people didn’t enjoy it.Īfter looking to be doomed with Disney Infinity’s shock closure, Avalanche Software came back from the brink and has developed the new Cars 3 tie-in: Driven to Win. The Cars 2 game came along later and moved away from the open-world style, instead focusing on Mario Kart-style arcade racing, including battle racing, and I spent many an hour playing it at work during a particularly slow period. It also spawned a sequel of sorts in Cars: Mater-National, that was equally fun but underrated, and was ideal for kids. The original game was a great blend of open-world and various race events, really capturing the essence of Radiator Springs and its inhabitants. Now, the Cars videogames have traveled a different road to the films, but have largely been overlooked by the masses. Returning to the world of motor racing and seeing Lightning McQueen still trying to compete against newer and more advanced machines, it seems as though Pixar listened to feedback and made the film that we arguably should have got in 2011. It was a decent watch and kids lapped it up, and I applaud Pixar for trying something different, but it was too far removed from the race car origins of the original and it seemed to be the end of the series.īut here we are in 2017 and Cars 3 has hit cinemas across the world. The sequel was greeted with much less enthusiasm, moving away from the race track and the sleepy town of Radiator Springs, into the world of espionage… for some reason. The first film was excellent a wonderful family film that extolled the virtues of friendship and humility, introducing us to the loveable Mater and, of course, Lightning McQueen. The players are able to make a selection of 22 characters that you are able to unlock through challenges.Cars is a strange franchise. There is a lot in this game that has been taken directly form the Cars 3 movie, from the characters and animation style to the world and tracks that the players inhabit. It wants you go to through the missions and retry them, doing different things each time to collect the specific challenge that might be attributed to that track. The shining stars in these game modes is battle race that is much more akin to the Kart style formula with weapons and items to pick up and the takedown mode which is actually more reminiscent of the Burnout games, something I found to be very a welcome inclusion.Ī quiet but valuable part of the game is the incredible number of challenges it has available.
The real value of this game comes through its game modes, Race, Battle race, Takedown, stunt showcase, best lap challenge, playground and then master level events. After the animated opening, there is no real story to be seen.

I feel it important to tell you that if you are after a blow by blow of the entire movie of Cars 3 but in game form, you won’t find it here. Like Mario Kart 64, Sonic R, Crash Team Racing or any of the litany of other kart racer games from other franchises, Cars: 3 Driven to Win possesses a few different game modes, some of which are way better than others. You can do flips, drift and go on two wheels in an interestingly animated fashion but these aren’t just for looks, they can help you slide through gaps and overtake opponents in situations that you can’t get in a normal game. Furthermore, the controls are tight and responsive and there are a great number of tricks that you can do to push yourself closer to first place.
